Opinies

“De Grote Russ Friedman Show […] beetje te oppervlakkig”
“Friedman is mijn favoriet”

Examenvragen

2011-2012 (Russell Friedman)

  • Analyze as thoroughly as possible the quotations from Augustine's work The Teacher and explain how the philosophical points in these quotations fit into Augustine's philosophy of mind as we studied it in class. How does the Platonic background to Augustine's thought play a role in his texts?
  • Explain how Aristotle deals with the problem of change. How does Aquinas make use of these concepts in his text 'On Creation'?
  • What is at issue in the medieval discussion of universals? Taking your point of departure in the attached texts from Duns Scotus, describe his theories of universals as completely as possible. Be sure to explain the 'less than numerical unity' and why Duns Scotus feels he need to introduce this. Why would a nominalist (like Abelard or Ockham) disagree?
  • What is a virtue in the medieval philosophical tradition, and what is the issue of the connection of virtues? Take as your point of departure the attached text from William of Ockham's treatise The Connection of the virtues, explain especially how Ockham's view on the freedom of will and his independence act of opportunity principle play a role in shaping his own solution to the problem of the connection of the virtues. NB: I am looking for an understanding of Ockham's system for dealing with the issue of the connection of the virtues, as we discussed it in class, not a detailes explanation of the five levels of each virtue.

2008-2009 (Russell Friedman?)

  • Analyze as thoroughly as possible the quotations from Augustine's work The Teacher and explain how the philosophical points in these quotations fit into Augustine's philosophy of mind as we studied it in class. How does the Platonic background to Augustine's thought play a role in his texts?
  • Anselm on truth. Explain the two truths of a proposition. Why is God the supreme Truth according to Anselm?
  • Abelard on Universals. What is at issue in the medieval discussion of universals? Taking your point of departure in the attached texts from Abelard, describe his theories of universals as completely as possible. Be sure to explain how Abelard thinks he is solving the problems a realist might say his theory of universals has.
  • Ockham on Virtues. What is a virtue in the medieval philosophical tradition, and what is the issue of the connection of virtues? Take as your point of departure the attached text from William of Ockham's treatise The Connection of the virtues, explain especially how Ockham's view on the freedom of will and his independence act of opportunity principle play a role in shaping his own solution to the problem of the connection of the virtues. NB: I am looking for an understanding of Ockham's system for dealing with the issue of the connection of the virtues, as we discussed it in class, not a detailes explanation of the five levels of each virtue.

2007-2008

  • Ockham over universalia.
  • Augustinus. Waarom was het stelen van peren zonde [ahv een stukje tekst uit confessiones]; gradule ontologie;
  • Geef het bewijs dat het kwaad volgens Augustinus niet bestaat [het bewijs was gegeven ingebed in een tekst];
  • Hoe denkt Thomas van Aquino over het kwaad [deprivatietheorie]en vergelijk dat met Augustinus denken.
  • Eckhart en Bernard. Wat is een deugd; Verschil tussen 'humility' en 'detachment'
  • Anselmus van Canterbury. Uit 'de veritate': welke twee soorten proposities zijn er; e.e.a. heeft te maken met rectitudo; een propositie kan weliswaar niet waar maar toch voldoen aan de functie die ze heeft; dat is de zwakke variant;
